Search behavior is changing. Customers researching equipment dealers aren’t only typing into Google anymore, they’re asking AI tools directly: who’s the best dealer near me, which Cat dealer would you recommend, what do people say about this dealership. And AI is answering with specific names.
A recent BrightLocal survey found that the share of AI-recommended businesses citing customer reviews as a factor jumped from 6% to 45% in a single year. That’s not a minor shift. That’s AI rapidly learning to lean on reviews as a primary signal for who to recommend.
So what is AI actually weighing when it makes that call? Based on how these tools behave, a few things consistently matter:
Recency. A review from 30 days ago carries more weight than one from 18 months ago. If your most recent review is old, AI can start to discount your dealership, even if your overall rating is strong. The fix: build the ask into your process. Text or email a review request within 24 hours of service completion, not just at the point of sale.
Specificity. “Great service” tells AI nothing useful. A review that mentions what was actually done, the equipment, the job, the outcome, gives AI something concrete to match against a customer’s specific question. Coaching your team to ask “what did we help you with today?” instead of “how was your visit?” makes a real difference here.
Consistency. AI pulls from multiple sources, your website, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and when those sources don’t agree on your name, address, phone number, or what you specialize in, it creates confusion about what you’re actually known for. The fix is an audit: make sure your business information and your service specialties are described the same way everywhere.
Responsiveness. Review responses are signals too, more text for AI to read and interpret. Responding to every review within 48 hours, and referencing something specific rather than a generic “thank you,” reinforces the same strengths your reviews are already building.
None of this requires a massive overhaul. It starts with one test: ask AI who it would recommend for your type of business in your area, and see what comes back. Then start working on the gaps.
